Magazine Terminology.

MastHead - The title of the Magazine, usually found at the top of the cover page or in the middle in the biggest writing, the likes of NME or Q which stand out on the front of a usually busy page. On this magazine it is NME in the top left corner.



Banner - On the front of a magazine, usually running from one side to the other which are there to help sell the magazine and catch the customers eye and make them want to buy it and read it. In this picture it runs along the top.


Main Image - This it the photo on the front of the magazine, taking up more than half of the magazine itself and this will be a unique selling point. This magazine has one of Mark Ronson.



Buzz Word - This is something which will also catch the readers eyes, words that stand out like WIN or FREE which make you look twice to see what you could be getting your hands on. This in in the top left corner of the magazine, above the MastHead


Headline - The main story that is in the magazine, this will most probably link in with the main image, on this magazine it is 'The renevation of Mark Ronson.'


Barcode - This is a code and convention, this tells you the price, the quality of the magazine, the issue number and date which are helpful for collectors and signifies that they are a magazine, not a poster. 90% of the time this will be in the bottom right corner.



Anchorage Text - Begins to explain what the headline is about and gives a greater insight to what will be inside the magazine whilst also explaining the image. This will be found above or below the Headline.




Puff - Stands out on the magazine, this will usually be in the shape of a circle or a star which stands out against the plain shapes and colours used throughout the rest of the magazine. This is at the top inside the banner showing that there is a free magazine inside in bright pink writing.


Secondary Images - Other images on the front cover which give you another hint to what may be inside the magazine other than just the main image.


Pug - An incentive to open the magazine, usually a shaded in corner to show that if you open the magazine this is what you could be getting, however this is not on all magazines.


Features - Other things that will be inside the magazine, which can either be other pictures or words which show what else can be in the magazine if you buy it.
